Large funding pool allocated for Hawke’s Bay’s Kiwisport projects

Nearly a quarter of a million dollars has been pumped into youth sport through Kiwisport.

Primary school students are the big winners in the first allocation of funds from Kiwisport with five projects being allocated $183,400 with swimming receiving the largest portion of $80,000 to develop a regional primary school swimming project.

Other successful projects include primary school cluster sports ($14,300), a school sport coordinator for Central Hawke’s Bay Schools ($40,000), a project to increase participation in organized sport at co-ed secondary schools ($39,000) and a fundamental skills programme ($11,000).

The funding distribution of $247, 095 was announced following consultation with schools and sport organisations throughout Hawke’s Bay.

Secondary schools were allocated $25,960 while $36,836.25 was distributed through a contestable fund for small community projects with 27 projects receiving up to $2500 in funding each.

The contestable fund is for small community projects and the projects must achieve the KiwiSport objectives of more kids, more opportunities and better skills in organized sport.

Sport Hawke’s Bay chief executive Colin Stone said a number of projects were evaluated before coming up with final approved projects as outlined below.

Swimming
Sport Hawke’s Bay has allocated funding to develop a regional primary school swimming project.  Partners for this project are currently being confirmed. The aim of this project will be to improve children’s swimming ability by delivering programmes to Hawke’s Bay Primary Schools.

Primary Schools Cluster Sports
This project will provide a variety of organised sport to clusters of primary schools in the Hawke’s Bay region.  For example four schools in close proximity will receive coaching in a specific sport over a four week period, culminating in an interschool event.  Teachers will also be given development in specific sporting codes during this programme

CHB Primary School Sport Coordinator
A primary schools sport coordinator will work across the 18 primary schools in Central Hawke’s Bay.  This role would involve delivering Fundamental Skills programmes, facilitating/delivering sport specific activities, organisation of interschool events, coordination of seasonal sporting opportunities, assisting in appropriate sporting programmes and liaising with Secondary School Sports Coordinators to maximise collaborative opportunities.

Co-ed Secondary Schools Project
This project aims to increase participation in organised sport for students from Taradale High School, Tamatea High School and William Colenso College, who are not currently involved in sport.  Specific initiatives will provide opportunities to meet the needs of these students.  Further opportunities for other Co-ed Schools will be developed as the project continues.

Fundamental Skills Programme – Omni Gymnastics
A six week Foundation Movement Skills programme will be delivered in three targeted primary schools for Years 1 -3, culminating in a competition day.  The foundation skills of this programme are used in all sports.

Applications for funding in year 2 opened on Friday July 16 July and close on August 31.

Application forms for large non-contestable projects and well as applications for the small contestable projects are available from Sport HB.
