Canterbury Triples
Canterbury's most successful Indoor Bowler David Philpott has won his 17th Canterbury Title in Sunday's Canterbury Triples. Philpott along with Ashley Diamond (skip) and Bev Diamond (Hornby) defeated the Garden City combination skipped by Murray Fraser with team mates Ricky Fraser and Helene Stuart 11-9 in a pulsating final. After leading comfortably all the way until the final few ends when the jitters seemed to kick in. Playing the final end Fraser had got to within one of Diamond and held 3 shots for the win playing the final delivery. Diamond unleashed with an accurate drive shot which disposed of all Fraser's bowls and left him with one shot and the win.
In two tight Semi Finals Diamond defeated the combination of Chris Matthews, Janette Lennon and Marion Thomas (Woolston) whilst Fraser defeated clubmates Ian Craw, Keith Mann and Phil.
The victory also virtually sewed up the 2010 Canterbury Player of the Year title for Ashley Diamond. After an outstanding season he has pulled 8 points clear of the only other player near him Katrina Wealleans. Only a Wealleans Victory and non qualification by Diamond would prevent him winning solely. If that scenario occurs then the title will be shared.
Hadlee Award Finalists
Canterbury's successful 2009 Welch Trophy Team has been selected as finalists for the 2010 Sports Team of the Year Award.
This achievement caps of a couple of very successful years for the region. The team was Ashley Diamond, Owen Ditfort, Simon Thomas, Dave Philpott, Blair Spicer, Mike King, Julie Thomas, Rob Osborne, Alan Clarke and Julie Dalley (Manager).
Results from the South Island Tour are now on-line. Tomorrow I will write an in-depth report on what I think will happen at this years North vs South game. Simon |
