TOP HONOURS FOR KAIAPOI

Kaiapoi Softball Club for the 2009 to 2010 season is now the proud recipient of the Canterbury Softball Association "CANTERBURY CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD". Canterbury Softball Association Executive Officer Cheryl Kemp presented us with this absolutely huge trophy which we were only to happy to receive. Along the way Cheryl mentioned how Kaiapoi Softball Club has re-invigorated itself into the Canterbury competition with overwhelming results, much attributed to the hard work everybody in the club has done.

Part of this success is also thanks to our funding providers - New Zealand Community Trust - Mainland Foundation -  and the confidence they have shown in us to deliver a high quality sport to our community. Without their help we would not have been recognised at this level and we thank them for making this all possible.

A big thank-you must also go out to our loyal sponsors - Kaikanui Tavern - Both Matt and Jonty Brownlee have been incredibly supportive over our playing season and we remain very grateful for that.

Kaiapoi Softball Club has a very strong desire to build the profile of Softball in North Canterbury so that people of all ages in the area become aware that this game does still exist and there is a well organised softball club right at their doorstep.

“Kaiapoi Softball Club’s mission is to provide a quality, fun environment to promote softball in North Canterbury; to allow people of all ages to be involved, learn, play and improve their skills with softball; and to implant firmly the ideals of good sportsmanship, teamwork, honesty, courage, participation, fairplay and the opportunity for people to belong to a sports club of choice”.

We all agree softball is a sport which demands superior sportsmanship, the ultimate in fairplay, the ability to use tactics to your team’s advantage and remain respectful in all aspects of the game. From respecting Umpire’s decisions to respecting the opposition, the ability to fully understand and appreciate softball is a huge task alone, but with perseverance and dedication this can all be achieved with outstanding results.

It is our goal to have as many people as we can involved in a sport that builds on respect and fair play and thrives on teamwork. To assist us to achieve this we need to make the necessary resources available to all of those involved, from players to parents, from coaches to scorers, and from supporters to our competitors.

Players need the right equipment, to be safe, to be professional, and to perform at their best.  Our Parents and supporters need accurate information in a timely manner and the ability to easily identify our teams playing on a diamond at any given time.  Our coaches, scorers and managers all need coaching, given the right tools and resources, these roles are the mentors and drivers in the club and are important to the success of Kaiapoi Softball Club.

Our competitors just need to know that we’re here for the long haul, we’re all about developing softball in North Canterbury, and we’re deadly serious about contributing to Softball in Canterbury as a whole.  We are certainly not here to make up the numbers and we intend to make our presence felt where and when ever we’re around!

Given the size of the club at present we have a contagious sense of “go get ‘em” in the club which is spreading and will continue to spread.  A lot of voluntary time has already been generously given to help establish Kaiapoi Softball Club, and I know that these same people share the vision I have and are willing to give a whole lot more time to see this club thrive and succeed.

With a huge amount of commitment from all our members during our off season we intend to hit the diamond running, making an immediate positive impact with the Canterbury softball community.  If we can build on the amount of young people we have representing Kaiapoi in softball year after year and at the same time re-introduce softball to those that are just seeking an opportunity to have a go, and eventually ‘catch the bug’, then ultimately Softball is the winner.

It is the club’s shared view that we seek to be the sport and sports club of choice in North Canterbury and to achieve this we need commitment, passion, follow-through and determination.  We already have these attributes and continue to build on them as we look to succeed in our pursuit to be a successful Softball club.  Thank-you for taking the time to read through this and we hope that this has given you a true and accurate interpretation of where Kaiapoi Softball Club is at and where we intend to go in the near future.
