The style of Karate known as Shitoryu is one of the four major styles in the World. The two most well known areas associated with Karate in Okinawa were Naha and Shuri. In the late 19th century the most famous grandmaster in Shuri was Itosu and in Naha the grandmaster was Higaonna. Kenwa Mabuni ,the founder of Shitoryu, was a student of both grandmasters, and out of respect for his teachers named his style "Shitoryu".

Karatedo Shitokai New Zealand follows the teachings of Kenwa Mabuni closely. It is the longest established Karate club in Whangarei, having been formed in 1968 and has been continually in operation since then. It is a founding member of Karate NZ and it's Head Instructor, Bob Dalton, is a current Karate NZ Coaching Council member.

Karatedo Shitokai is also the NZ representative member for both the World Shitoryu Karate Federation, and the Asia Pacific Shitoryu Karate  Federation and regularly attends World and regional Shitoryu tournaments. The club has produced many NZ and International Champions over the years, but we realise that not everyone who who practices Karate wishes to compete, so club trainings are devoted to traditional Shitoryu karate with all competition coaching conducted outside normal club training.

Karatedo Shitokai NZ is affiliated to the Hasegawa Karate School in Kofu Japan, and regularly brings to NZ Yukimitsu Hasegawa, the school's Head Instructor, to help improve the standard of our students. We are also affiliated with & are  "sister" club clubs with Association Shitoryu Karatedo Nouvelle Caledonie,( a New Caledonian club, based in Noumea) & have regular teaching & exchange visits with them, & they now have their own section on this website (see Noumea Sister Club Section). For any further information, please contact Bob Dalton.
Our sister club has emailed me a photo of their group at the Auckland Open. It is under PHOTOS in the Noumea club section.
