The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union provides competition rugby for over 1500 players in the central South Island region of New Zealand, based in Ashburton. Competitions range from senior (combined with Ellesmere & Nth Canterbury sub-unions) to Under 8. The MCRU also enters representative teams in inter-provincial competitions and tournaments. The Mid Canterbury Senior team is consistently a top performer in the NZRU Heartland Competition, being runners-up in 2008 and finalists in 2009.
The MCRU is charged with running and developing the game of rugby union within Mid Canterbury and is affiliated both to the New Zealand Rugby Union and the Crusaders Super 14 franchise. The Union is comprised of the Allenton RFC, Celtic RFC, Collegiate RFC, Hampstead RFC, Methven RFC, Mt Somers RFC, Rakaia RFC, Southern RFC and Tinwald RFC. The Union also provides rugby development support for Ashburton College, Mt. Hutt College and 22 local primary and intermediate schools.
