ONEPOTO CLUBROOMS - A step closer to a new home

Friday 15th January 2010
This news article appeared in the North Shore Times during the week.

The Onepoto Domain Clubrooms will remain at their current location.

The decision by North Shore councillors follows analysis of alternative site options and costs, with an officer's report concluding that the current location is the best option.

Auckland Australian Rules Football Club has been anxiously awaiting permission to base itself at the currently unused clubrooms, after going 30 years without a home.

The club's executives and half of its 460-odd members are Shore- based and the size of Onepoto's fields means it would be the appropriate site, president Rob Greenwood says.

A group of residents have fought this, saying that the domain is a family area and that clubrooms would introduce more problems with booze in the area.

Councillors called for an investigation into alternative uses and sites for the rooms that have remained unused for three years.

The council is continuing lease negotiations with the club subject to the compliance with the domain's management plan and that a management committee be formed that includes the club, residents and other stakeholders.

Mr Greenwood says the club is willing to share the rooms with other groups and will not have a liquor licence.

"We were going to renovate the building and fit it out with chairs, tables and fridges. Everything to make it suitable for us and for use by the community."

Great News!
