2010 Review
Another great weekend of good spirits, high and low level rivalry and some half-decent footy, interspersed with the typical Wellington winter we've had capped of the third Wellington Masters Football Tournament.
Congrats to Dave Batty's Capital Hearts team and the Petone Armanis for an excellent 35+ Div 1 final and a 3-0 win for the Hearts, while the Lower Hutt Ancient Ones showed historic form in winning the 35+ Div 2 final 2-0 over BNU.
In the 40+ Final the Island Bay Originals came home as they beat returning New Plymouth Rangers 3-0. Rangers though posted the weekend's highest score with a 10-0 win over BNU Old Balls - and thanks for making the journey down once again.
An event review is underway and the early suggestion is 3 games on the Sat and only 2 on the Sunday, and some fine tuning of the age grading.! It makes a lot of sense to preserve the tired legs.
We are also very keen to grow the women's tournament and are looking at 2 pools of 4 teams for next year, to play on a one-day basis.
Any suggestions are welcome and feel free to drop a line to

Thanks everyone for your great support of the event, and particularly to Wellington City Council, New Zealand Community Trust and Rongotai College.

Masters Football Ready to Kick Off
The third annual Wellington Masters Football Tournament is set to play on September 11 and 12 with 27 men’s teams and four women’s teams set to strut their stuff at Rongotai College, well up from the inaugural year of 21 teams.
The Tournament caters for a Men’s Over 35 and Over 40 section, while Women’s teams start at 28 years of age and are in a one-day tournament.
“It’s a great response and really underlines how popular Masters football is and how strong Wellington’s football culture is.” says Games Manager Ian Rogers. “We had a great event last year so word must have spread, with several clubs putting in more than one team this year”.
2011 - This year's Wellington Masters Football Tournament will be on 10-11 September - mark your diary or pre-register by emailing us.
2010 Review
The Tournament is run over two days at six fields at Rongotai College, with games 20 minutes each way and teams playing three games each day. “Because of the increase in teams, we’ve had to use two more fields at St Pat’s College and Evans bay Intermediate – with a shuttle bus service to help out.” says Ian Rogers.
The team lists make colourful reading, featuring the North Wellington Whiskeys & Malvinas, Waterside Fossils, Wellington United Diamond Dreamers, , Olympic Legends, and visiting New Plymouth Rangers. Last year’s Tawa side are back to defend their title in the Over 35s, as are the Lower Hutt Ancient Ones..
The event will start with the signing of the Games FIFA Fair Play Charter and the now customary Captain’s Tipple to toast the Spirit of the Games. Jazz musicians, food and coffee stalls all add to the event, while students from the New Zealand College of Massage Therapists will help get tired and sore bodies back up for another game. Physiotherapy support and first aid is also on-site. Adding to the football-filled weekend is the Phoenix playing Sydney FC on Saturday night at Westpac Stadium.
Rolling substitutions are permitted in all games, with team squads restricted to a maximum of 17 players. In anticipation of tired legs, on the second day teams who are participating in a final placing match may choose a penalty shoot-out to decide a result to help lighten the load and provide a bit of fun.
“It’s a great turnout of teams and characters from all around the place, and after the wet winter we’ve had we are all looking forward to a bit of spring football, hopefully in the sun.” says Ian Rogers.
