Canterbury Sea Kayak Network (CSKNet)
What is CSKNet?
CSKNet is a network type of club and uses e-mail and this web site for contact with its members to announce events.
There are a few things CSKNet does NOT have and these are membership fees, constitution and elected officers.
It does have organised trips and an annual training weekend. These are all free .
So who "pays" for the services that CSKNet provides? It is provided by members willing to give their time.
To become a member you need to provide your e-mail address to the notice sender or to the Club Contact.
Advertising, the bane of the web, very occasionally happens and will be limited to a member selling their gear. See Gear For Sale .
Finally, liability. Other than "acts of God" (see the film staring Billy Connolly, "The Man Who Sued God" ), you are ultimately responsible for your own safety. If conditions are such that you are not willing to paddle solo, be prepared to either not go or to turn back. Always let others with you know what your decision is.

Past Events
KASK Forum - Wainui
A sucessful national forum was held on the weekend of 9, 10, 11 March 2012. Plenty of paddling, on-water teaching sessions, presentations on weather, safety & paddling locations, and even a demonstration of flares and helicopter rescue.
Okains Bay Training Weekend 2012
Was held on 20/21 January. A fairly full camp ground but room was found for CSKNet. The Saturday morning was light winds allowing a paddle out to the south heads with the usual seals, dolphins and penguins. Balancing in the bay and paddle technique held before lunch with the lagoon used in the afternoon when the wind increased a little, producing just enough surf to capsize some. The evening talk was given by John Kirk-Anderson, weather, to the point and definitely a talk to have heard.
Sunday was grey, stating to rain and an early departure was made by most though some hardy souls braved the rain to try other kayaks.
Okains Bay Training Weekend 2011
Another weekend with enough surf to keep most people happy or intimidated depending on skill levels. There were onshore sessions including Gadgets (again!) and on the water; rescues, efficient paddling, etc. and a trip round the bay on Sunday looking for seals and dolphins.
Okains Bay Training Weekend 2010
The 2010 annual Okains Bay training weekend had a good turn-out and though there were strong winds on Saturday, the programme was amended to allow for these. A lot of people learned a lot so it achieved what it set out to do.
Max and Melanie turned up on Sunday at lunchtime having reached the mid point of their circumnavigation paddle round the South Island. They are hoping the weather will allow them to finish the trip in a little over 30 days.
Christmas Dinner Paddles
2011 - dinner was held on 10 December. A stiff easterly on the Saturday though not too cold. The wind blew hard during the night and it was a lumpy sea with the wind still blowing on the way back next morning. A little smaller group than some years but two new paddlers and one who supposedly hadn't paddled before came, handling the paddling and evening as if old hands.
2009 - the 19 (Sat) Dec 2009 Christmas dinner paddle to Quail Island went well and over 20 paddlers eventually arrived for a meal. Half of that number stayed the night and left next morning with a warm southerly blowing.
Lake Heron Trip
17 July 2011
This was a very successful trip in perfect conditions.
