The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union provides competition rugby for over 1700 players in the central South Island region of New Zealand, based in Ashburton. Competitions range from Senior (combined with Ellesmere & North Canterbury sub-unions) to Under 7. The MCRU also enters representative teams in inter-provincial competitions and tournaments. The Mid Canterbury Senior team is consistently a top performer in the NZRU Heartland Competition, being runners-up in 2008, finalists in 2009 and semifinalists in 2010 and 2011.
The MCRU is charged with running and developing the game of rugby union within Mid Canterbury and is affiliated both to the New Zealand Rugby Union and the Crusaders Super 14 franchise. The Union is comprised of the Allenton RFC, Celtic RFC, Collegiate RFC, Hampstead RFC, Methven RFC, Mt Somers RFC, Rakaia RFC, Southern RFC and Tinwald RFC. The Union also provides rugby development support for Ashburton College, Mt. Hutt College and 22 local primary and intermediate schools.
The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union is keen to encourage more participants into local rugby.
