The South Canterbury Rugby Football Union (SCRFU) was formed in 1888 when it broke away from the Canterbury Rugby Football Union. The province had two sub-unions, MacKenzie & Waimate with separate competitions, but these entered the South Canterbury wide competition in the 1953 and 1963 respectively.  The SCRFU is currently made up of eight senior clubs: Celtic, Geraldine, Harlequins, MacKenzie, Old Boys, Pleasant Point, Temuka, and Waimate. Pareora and Timaru Boys High School are also affiliated, and Roncalli College and Mountainview High School also enter age grade teams in the local competitions. The Star and Zingari clubs merged to form Harlequins in 1998.

The first club rugby match in South Canterbury was between the Timaru and Temuka Clubs at Arowhenua on 15 October 1867. In April  1875 the South Canterbury Football Club was formed.  A match between North and South Canterbury at Ashburton on 24 May 1875 resulted in a draw. The Waimate Football Club was formed on 24 May 1876.

South Canterbury’s main rugby grounds are situated at Alpine Energy Stadium (formerly Fraser Park), Church Street, Timaru, a multi-use floodlit stadium which has played host to International, Super 14 and representative fixtures.  South Canterbury defended the Ranfurly Shield there in 1950 and 1974. South Canterbury won the 2nd division South Island in 1976, 1977, 1981 and the national 3rd division in 1986, 1991, 1998 and 2001.
