Swimmers Shine in Dargaville

Over 200 swimmers from 13 clubs (including teams from Auckland and Waikato) took part in the highly successful Douglas Logging Northland Swimming Championships held at the Kauri Coast Community Pool in Dargaville at the weekend.

The most outstanding swimmer in terms of results was 13 year old Northwave swimmer Freyah Ruri who won every race she entered. She brought home 11 gold medals and broke an incredible 12 Northland Champs race records.

Other swimmers to feature included 11 year old Ellie Eastwood from Whangarei Swimming Club who won 8 gold medals and broke 6 Northland Champ race records, Haydn Jurisich (16) from Bay of Islands who also won 8 gold medals and broke 4 Northland Champs race records, 17 year old Carla Marsh from Bay of Islands who won 6 gold medals and broke 5 Northland Champs race records and 14 year old Maddison Eastwood from Whangarei Swimming Club who won 7 gold medals.

There were many other stand-out performances during the 3 day carnival, with the following swimmers dominating their respective age groups by winning 5 gold medals or more across the full range of events:

9 yrs:  Mia Gordon (Northwave)

11 yrs: Ellie Eastwood (Whangarei)

          Seth Foaogali (Bream Bay)

12 yrs: Turanga Morgan-Edmonds (Bream Bay)

13 yrs: Freyah Ruri (Northwave)

          Josh Young (Northwave)

14 yrs: Maddison Eastwood (Whangarei)

Bailey Maihi (Bay of Islands)

15 yrs: Chad Walker (Bream Bay)

16 yrs: Hadyn Jurisich (Bay of Islands)

17 yrs: Carla Marsh (Bay of Islands)

Swimming Northland Patron Ian Jones was on hand to present medals on the second day of competition. The former All Black, himself a Northland swimming representative in his younger days, still competes in the sport through the Ocean Swim Series of events and was supporting his own son who was competing in the championships.

The Bream Bay Swimming Club stood out in the club relays, winning the Crawford Woodman Trophy for the eight person relay (across 4 age groups) and breaking the record.

Many more Northland swimmers also qualified for national championships at the weekend. The Northland junior swimmers (12 years and under), will be headed by 2011 NZ Junior Championship triple gold medalist Ellie Eastwood, and will be travelling to Hamilton in February to compete at the national championships.

The 13 years and over swimmers, headed by 2011 NZ Age Group Championship multi-medallist Melita Raravula, will be competing at the NZ Age Group Championships in Wellington in March.

Swimmers in this age group will have one last chance of qualifying for both the NZ Age Group Champs and the lower ranked NZ Div 2 carnival by competing in the Northland Summer carnival, which will be held in Dargaville on Saturday 6 February.

Swimming Northland 40th Reunion
Swimming Northland has confirmed that a 40th reunion celebration will be held on 2 June 2012.

Many people connected to Swimming Northland over the last 40 years have been contacted regarding their availability to attend, but we are also aware that we do not have the contacts details of a huge number of others.

We are, therefore, seeking registrations of interest from anyone who has been involved with Swimming Northland over the years and who would like to attend the reunion next year.
