Racewalking Auckland (RWA) aims to promote the sport of racewalking in the greater Auckland area. You do not have to be an Olympic style racewalker to join the Racewalking Auckland Association; we have both freestyle walkers and racewalkers as members, covering a range of walking speeds. If you like to walk, then this is the place for you. From this site, you can find information about racewalking, find contacts for the Racewalking Auckland Association, and pick up the latest racewalking news from Auckland and further afield. Our members range from fitness enthusiasts to Commonwealth Games Silver Medallists in all ages from 8 to 88...age and ability is no barrier here!
Through Racewalking Auckland, you can learn the basic technique at the regular Sunday morning events (which generally start at 8:30am) by practising with other newcomers, receiving tips on style, taking part in a variety of events, and be encouraged to compete in open races. We have numerous racewalkers with many years experience who are more than happy to help you with your technique. Please see our feature Racewalk 101 article along with other items on our Articles page for information on technique and rules.
Members will receive, either by email or post, newsletters which report on race results and provides details of coming events - both those organised by Racewalking Auckland, along with a variety of other events; some organised by other clubs around the country, and fun run/walks.
There is an event on every Sunday. Our most utilised starting point is from the Grandstand at the Auckland Domain at 8:30am. Other venues include Mt Smart Stadium, Cornwall Park, Mangere Bridge, Ngataringa Bay Naval Reserve at Devonport, and Douglas Track at Waitakere Stadium. See here for directions to some of our regular venues.
We have a range of events from ‘first past the post’ to handicaps and estimated time walks (closest to their estimate wins). This enables both faster and slower walkers the chance to win trophies and prizes. We also have a Junior Racewalking Winter Series which runs monthly from April to August. Please see our Events , Harry Kerr Relay and Junior Series pages for upcoming events within Auckland and nationally.
Racewalking Auckland also enters teams in relay events; it can be regarded as the top ranked club in the country with victories in the National Ekiden Road Relay championship in Trentham in 2008, 2009, and 2010 and 2011, the National Harry Kerr Track Relay in Auckland in 2008, 2009,2010, 2011 and the Great Lake Relay around Lake Taupo in February 2009, 2010 and in 2011 with a little help from our friends. Members also participate in other national walking events - such as the Taranaki Open Walks weekend in June, and the National Long Distance Championships in Hastings in October. We also boast the likes of Commonwealth Games silver medallist Tony Sargisson, as well as several national champions in junior, open and masters fields. Please see our Results pages for who has been doing what.
So please come along and try us out. We’re a friendly bunch and welcome new and former members of every age anytime. Please see our RWA Info page for all enquiries and membership information.
