Nestle Club of the Week!!
17 April 2014
Club Founded: 1962
Brief History: When Otara opened its doors to the many families that migrated from the Southern and Northern parts of Auckland, as well as the Pacific Islands, the club members decided to breakaway from the Otahuhu RFC and establish the current East Tamaki Rugby Football Club, affiliated to the Auckland Rugby Football Union. The ETRC is 50 years old and celebrated 50 years in 2012.
The ETRC is a non-profit organization which offers Rugby Union for the ‘Tangata’ in the Otara- EastTamaki- Flatbush areas. It caters for all age groups from the under 6’s to the over 60’s (health permitted). With the high rate of unemployment and beneficiaries the ETRFC continues to cater for the community and the club does its best with very limited resources to meet their needs.
All Blacks from your club:
Eric Rush: A life member of the club and former All Black with 29 games and nine tests between 1992 and 1996. A Rugby Sevens legend, arguably one of the greatest Sevens players to grace the game.
Pita Alatini: An East Tamaki RFC junior club player who developed and achieved the heights of playing for the the All Blacks. Pita played in 17 tests for the All Blacks between 1999 and 200, scoring six test tries.
Any other famous members: Other former East Tamaki RFC members who have reached International representative honors are; the late Pita Fatialofa, Junior Paramore, Ngapaku Ngapaku, Mark Luafalealo, Koki Avei, Rob Avei and Tupou Fa’amasino (Manu Samoa) Talai Fafita, Sam and Tony Alatini (Tonga) and junior players who have excelled in other sports such as Ali Laua’iti’iti, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck (Roosters) and Manu Vatuvei (Warriors) just to name a few.
Number of teams in 2014 (senior/junior): sadly this year we are struggling with numbers to cater for teams that we need to hold on our Premiership status.
We are working very hard now, to get those teams back for the 2015 season and secure that premiership status. Seniors: Premier, Reserves & Womens. Juniors: Under 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and hopefully an U13
Premier coaches: Richard Manu’a & Lafaele Sefo
Captain: Ioane Ioane
