Who’s at risk from adding Fluoride in our water?

  • Babies drinking formula mixed with fluoridated water

  • People with kidney problems who are unable to excrete fluoride efficiently

  • Elderly people exposed to a lifetime of fluoridated water and toothpaste

  • Children who drink a lot of water and swallow fluoridated toothpaste

  • Sports people, labourers and diabetics who drink large amounts of fluoridated water

  • Those who suffer from malnutrition e.g. calcium, magnesium, iodine and vitamin C and D deficiencies.

  • Everyone is at risk from the effects of fluoride on the chemical processes in the body e.g., disruption of enzymes in the digestive system and thyroid hormones that contribute to weight gain.

What are the sources of Fluoride?

  • Fluoridated water

  • Fluoridated toothpastes, gels and mouth rinses

  • Fluoride from pesticides used on fruit and vegetables, drinking tea

  • Some drugs eg Prozac

What are signs of Fluoride poisoning?

  • White or opaque, pitted and mottled teeth in children

  • Neurological effects such as headaches and depression

  • Gastro-intestinal pain in adults and colic in infants and children

  • Acne and other skin conditions

  • Underactive thyroid and other endocrine disorders

  • Arthritis, joint and bone pain

  • Hip fractures and spine degeneration

  • Infertility

Is there a Safe dose of Fluoride for everyone?

No, some people are very sensitive to fluoride and accumulate more fluoride than others. Exposure over a long period increases your risk of fluoride poisoning. Fluoride is not an essential trace mineral and interferes with many bio-chemical pathways in the body.

Will children’s teeth get more dental decay if Fluoridation of Hamilton’s water is stopped?

No, data over 10 years shows no significant difference in the decay rates between Napier (non-fluoridated) and Hastings (fluoridated) and this is confirmed by comparative studies of fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities in many countries. When fluoridation of water has been stopped, decay rates do not increase. Dental decay rates have been dropping over the past 20 years regardless of water fluoridation.

Is there any benefit to teeth from Fluoride?

Current research shows some hardening effect from fluoride when applied topically to children’s teeth. Toothpaste contains 1000ppm of fluoride and should not be swallowed.  To reduce the risk of swallowing fluoride, for children under the age of 6, a smear of standard fluoridated toothpaste or a low dose fluoridated toothpaste, is recommended by Ministry of Health. For children over 6 years a small pea size amount of toothpaste is recommended. All children should be taught to spit out the toothpaste and rinse thoroughly and brush their teeth at least twice a day.  A small minority of people may have mouth sensitivity from fluoridated toothpaste.

Is Fluoride an essential nutrient for the human body?

No, fluoride is not known to cause a disease when it is absent in the diet nor does it contribute to any normal metabolic process in the body. Dental decay results from excessive exposure to sugar-laden foods and refined carbohydrates and can be prevented through a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, traditional sources of protein and fat such as meat, seafoods and milk products. Maori children in the 1930s, living on a traditional bush and seafood diet, had excellent teeth and bones.

Is it ethical to add Fluoride to our water supply?

No, fluoride added to water is being used as a medical drug to bring about a medical effect (i.e. hardening teeth). It is unethical to add fluoride to the water supply because people drink varying amounts of water, resulting in uncontrolled dosage, and have varying sensitivity to fluoride, which is not assessed by medical authorites, nor monitored by most doctors.

Can I remove Fluoride from my water?

A reverse osmosis filter is the best water to remove fluoride from your water. Boiling will only concentrate the chemical. Most standard filters will not remove fluoride.
