The final day of racing at the Hartley 16 nationals in New Plymouth saw the fleet complete 3 races in light to moderate winds. Overnight leader “Tight Fit” Alan Holdt & Roger Fawcett(NPYC) held off a strong challenge from “Stratos” Simon Holdt & Nathan McArthur(NPYC) to win the 2013 nationals by two points, with defending champion “Pronto” Gareth & Mike Insley(Manukau) making a late run to claim 3rd also claiming the family trophy.
The class uses the “one design handicap system” for the handicap result with local crew Guy & David Ormrod in Splash taking 1st place.
The off water socialising as always, was well attended, with judge snowflake presiding over the very entertaining daily court session, with the proceeds going to the newly formed Sailability Taranaki. Thanks goes to Sponsors Black Heart, Carlsberg, Wild Buck, NZCT, Doyle Sails, IED Lifting Centre, TSB Bank, Taranaki Providers, and a big thanks to Joseph Wright, and race officer Jamie Sutherland.
The 48th Hartley 16 National Champs will be held in Manukau, and with the class doing a publicity drive over the next 12 months with the aim of increasing numbers it could be the biggest nats yet.

Hartley 16 North Island Champs
Hartley 16 North Island Champs comes down to the wire.
The Hartley 16 class North Island champs, hosted by the Ngaroto Boating Club came down to a tie break between eventual winner Rumbo sailed by Wayne Holdt and Jeremy Pritt and defending North Island champion Stratos Simon Holdt and Nathan McAthur, both boats from New Plymouth.
Twelve boats from New Plymouth, Napier, Whangarei, Te Awamutu and Auckland competed in the regatta in at times gusty conditions which kept everyone one their toes. Third place went to Napier’s Tickled Pink sailed by Paul De Munk and Thijs Calkoen with current national champion Pronto Gareth Insley from Auckland who teamed up with local Hartley 16 sailor Rob Greenwood in fourth.
Again the hospitality was excellent, a big thanks to the members of the Ngaroto club and also race officer Danny Padman.
This regatta is a great social event as well as the tight racing and was a great shake down before the National Champs in New Plymouth 16-19 January 2013.
The Hartley 16 Class association has just finished an upgrade on their constitution and class rules and can be found on the Class Docs page
