Four riders working together to get the fastest time for 4kms, which is 16 laps of a standard 250m velodrome. Prior to 2013 it was 3km, with only three riders.
Riders take turns working periodically on the front, then peel off and sit in the team's slipstream to prepare to hit the front again. The finish time is taken off the third rider to cross the line so one rider may drop off during the ride.
In qualifying stages of racing the goal is to ride as fast as possible with all the riders staying together – in finals it’s to gain distance, or catch the opposing team.
