The minutes for the latest executive group meeting is now here. ...

One key point is that by 2015 clubs can only apply to have their competitions sanctioned every quarter of the year (Jan, April, July, Oct).

Another is, athletes who have qualified to compete at the OWNZ National Championships are permitted to compete in a different weight class – higher or lower. However the athlete must notify the competition organisers of their intended weight class at the final Verification of entries meeting that precedes the start of the competition.

Oceania Championships (pacific games) in Papua New Guinea in 2015 will include Youth and Junior competitions.

Guest lifters at the National Championships are currently not eligible to gain points towards their club team total. This matter will be brought up at the AGM under general bussiness.

THE INAUGURAL OCEANIA MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS

At last we will have our own regional masters championships. The first ones will be in Brisbane over 15 - 17 June 2012.

There are no entry qualifications as far as performances are concerned for these first championships. Of course you must be registered with OWNZ.

The organisers are 'dead' keen to have as many Kiwis lifting as possible.

The entry fees, forms etc will be out soon.

World and Oceania records can be set at these championships.

Please let the OWNZ masters Convenor know if you are going brait@slingshot.co.nz

Keep a watch on the "Iwf-Masters" webpage too.

9 February 2012 - National League
2012 National Weightlifting League is underway with start lists for round 12 now available.  Bit of a quiet start for a lot of teams, with some numbers down, but we will see them increase as the season moves into full speed.  A big welcome to the Combined Crossfit Affiliates (CCA) team, organised by Ricahrd Patterson.  No doubt we will see this team grow quite rapidly throughout the year and the start of a good relationship between the two codes.  Looking at some of the teams entered, it is quite evident that clubs have really started to understand the rule structure and promote young and up and coming lifters into their squads; some close battles will result and predictions for future champions almost impossible to make.

Good luck to all lifters and coaches for the weekends lifting and may many personal bests be broken!!

Executive Officer

Anti Doping
All lifters that have been selected for NZ or have been named on the "Squad Lists" are reminded to update themselves with the latest Drug Free Sport New Zealand News.  Also, being on these lists does mean that lifters could potentially be subject to random out of competition testing and that these lists have been, in part, formulated in conjunction with Drug Free Sport to fulfill that function.

Affiliation update
The board asks that those who have not yet affiliated please do so.  Afiliation requires registration online and payment. Quite a few members have registered online but have failed to match payment, which is not easy for OWNZ to manage.  The board has also decided that those who are not affiliated for their first lift in February will not have their results recognised and those who do not produce their membership cards in March will not have their results recognised.  Recognition (or lack of) will include points that are generated for the league.

The board asks all club secretaries to get behind the new system and encourage all their members to affiliate as soon as possible.  Further to this, if a club secretary wants to know if their members are affiliated to OWNZ they only need contact Margaret Spooner or Terry Hughes to gain a membership list.

Many thanks.

Executive Officer

New Zealand gained victory against Aussie in this years junior teams test match with many fine lifts and a number of age group records broken on the way.  The last lift of the day saw Mathew Madsen break his own clean and jerk record in the u85kg division.  Many personal bests were beaten as lifters pushed themselves to add valuable team points.  Many thanks to all the coaches, officials and volunteers who made the day a great success.

The 2011 New Zealand Weightlifting League season is just 2 weeks away from starting.

New Format

This year a new format is going to be tested.  Lifters will compete against other lifters on an individual basis – head to head so to speak.  It is hoped that this will make the league more personalized for the participants.  This format will lead us into a travelling league in 2012 for Division 1, where teams will travel to other teams venues to compete.

Please click on the link below to see how the new format will be presented:

2011 Teams

In 2011 a number of new teams are entering the league for the first time.  We will see a brand new team from Nelson Bays Weightlifting come on board, I hope you will all join me in welcoming the Nelson team (Team leaders: Robert Jenkins, Ralph White, Glen Stewart) back into the fold and look forward to seeing a former powerhouse of New Zealand Weightlifting rise again.  We will also see Netfit and Christchurch City Weightlifting start ‘B’ teams in Division 2 as both clubs continue to grow.  Gillies ave and Counties Manukau will combine to form a very competitive team and Otago will lift under a new name: Dunedin City Weightlifting.  Given the continued growth and development of the sport the OWNZ executive would like to say thank you to all the clubs out there for showing enthusiasm and motivation.  We lift in exciting times.

Teams competing in the NZWL this year include:

Division 1
Northsport Weightlifting-        Auckland
Netfit Olympic Weightlifting- Auckland
Weightlifting Canterbury-        Canterbury
Christchurch City Weightlifting- Canterbury
Gillies Avenue Weightlifting/CMOW- Auckland
[Division 1 lifters shall require a minimum of D grade to register points]

Division 2
Nelson Bays Weightlifting-        Nelson
Dunedin City Weightlifting-        Otago
Southland Olympic Weightlifting- Southland
Christchurch City Weightlifting B- Canterbury
Netfit Olympic Weightlifting B- Auckland
