Information about the PRE horse

Foals of both sexes should have their forelock, mane and tail shaved off.  This is the only trimming for males.

The one year old female will have some forelock growth, which is left, but the mane is trimmed closely about 1 centimetre long.  It is permissable to shape it very slightly to enhance the neck line.  The top of the dock is still shaved leaving a short broom like tail.

At two years the female will have more forelock and the mane continues to be trimmed.  The broom will now be longer on the tail. At three years the mane trimming continues and the top of the dock is still shaved.

An adult mare will have her mane trimmed and the top of the dock shaved with the tail trimmed to just below the hocks. See picture in gallery.
